Why an IPTV app asks for your TV's MAC address
Smart TV apps that play your own playlist almost all work the same way: the TV shows a MAC address, you enter your playlist details on a website, and the app picks them up. It looks odd the first time. The reason is simple — nobody wants to type an Xtream password with a remote control.
ScopE TV is a player application only. It does not include channels, content or a subscription — you connect the playlist you already have from your own provider.
The short version
- Your TV shows a MAC address. It is the network identifier the set already has — nothing is generated or assigned.
- You type your playlist details on a phone or laptop, where you have a real keyboard.
- The two are matched by that MAC address, so the app knows which playlist is yours.
- Restart the app and your channels are there. You never type a password on the TV.
This is why the app shows a code before it shows anything else, and why it looks empty until you have done the step on your phone.
What actually happens
- 1
The app registers the device
On first launch it tells our server "this MAC address exists" and gets a 7-day trial. Nothing about you is involved — there is no account and no login on the TV.
- 2
You add the playlist from a browser
On a phone or laptop you enter the MAC address shown on screen, plus your own Xtream host, username and password. A QR code on the TV opens the right page with the MAC already filled in.
- 3
The app collects them on next launch
It asks the same question again — "anything for this MAC?" — and this time gets the playlist back. Your channels load and the app stops asking.
Questions this raises, answered
Is a MAC address private?
It identifies a device on a local network and is not tied to your name, your address or your account. We use it only to match a device to the playlist its owner entered.
Why not just log in on the TV?
Because typing an email and a password on an on-screen keyboard with a remote is miserable, and Xtream passwords are long and random. Doing it once in a browser is faster and less error-prone.
What if I replace the TV?
A new set has a new MAC address, so it is a new device. A licence can be transferred to it from the portal rather than bought again.
Can someone else use my MAC?
A playlist can only be attached to a device that has actually run the app, and each claim is an authenticated, rate-limited action. A MAC on its own is not enough to take anything over.
Troubleshooting
The portal says my MAC address was not found.
The device has to run the app at least once before it can be claimed — that first launch is what creates the record. Open ScopE TV on the TV, then try again.
I added the playlist but the TV still shows the code.
Restart the app. It checks for a playlist on launch, so one already running will not notice until it starts again.
Where do I find the MAC address?
On the app's first screen, under the QR code. It is also in Settings once a playlist is loaded.
Can I put the same playlist on two TVs?
Yes — each one needs its own licence, because a licence covers one device. Enter the same details against each MAC address.
Does the MAC address change?
Not normally. If a set is factory reset it may report a different one, in which case it registers as a new device and the licence can be transferred across.
